EASY SEO OPTIMISATION TIPS

A BIT OF DEDICATION WILL PUT YOU AHEAD OF YOUR COMPETITION

You’ve launched your new website, ready to welcome crowds of new visitors. But, if no-one finds your new website, how will they see what you have to offer? And that’s why search engine optimisation (SEO)  has always been an important topic for website owners for years. The good news is that despite its coverage, most website owners don’t do any form of SEO. A bit of dedication will put you way ahead of a lot of your competition. Even better, these are ideas that don’t require any knowledge of code to try out.

USE RELEVANT KEYWORDS

Keywords are in essence the search terms that your potential visitor would use to find your site on Google. It may sound like it needs to be one word, but actually it’s usually best to use a short relevant phrase. For example, if your website is about a restaurant in Glasgow, it’s not advisable for your keyword to be “restaurant.” Rather, try something like, “restaurants in Glasgow” Imagine what a user might search for on Google and focus on that. To help find suitable keywords, we recommend using the free Google keyword planner tool.

While on the subject of keywords, it is important to remember and use keywords in several places on your website:

Meta description: This is the short description that you find in the search engines, displayed under the post title

Your page URL: Ensure that the website page url is structured correctly and includes relevant keywords within the address. For example this post uses the keywords, seo and tips as part of the url.

Page Title: This is one of the most important ones to remember!

Headlines: Google and many other search engines like it when you use short and relevant headlines to break up your content into paragraphs. To break up your content it’s recommended that you use headlines that include the keyword phrases that you would like to be found for. Also use H1 and H2 heading types.

INBOUND LINKS ARE A MUST

An inbound link is when another website link’s to you website. The better the website is the more SEO benefits you will get from it. For example, if BBC was to link to your site, it makes your website look more credible in the eyes of Google and other search engines. As a result they will likely rank you higher in the search results. However, we know it’s not always possible to get links from these types of sites. Even if BBC isn’t linking to you, it’s still beneficial to generate as many inbound links from just about any credible source.

COMBINE YOUR BLOGS AND WEBSITE IN ONE DOMAIN

Our blog and business are both showing on the same website (obsidianmarketing.co.uk). We don’t use sub-domains (such as blogs.obsidianmarketing.co.uk), because these are viewed as two different websites by many search engines.

NARROW THE FOCUS

If Google, Bing and other search engines are unable to pick out a clear focus from your webpage, it’s not going to perform well on the search results. Search engines are looking for the best and most relevant content for search queries, so it generally seeks out the most specific, credible information.

USE RELEVANT PERMALINKS ON YOUR PAGES

The links that you add on your website can play a large part in how highly they rank for. Aim to use clean links, like “restaurant.com/our-lunch-menu” rather than “restaurant.com/2015/05/our-lunch-menu” as this makes it much easier for search engines to crawl your website.

IMPROVE WEBSITE LOAD TIME

This has become a big ranking factor . If your website has a slow loading time. you will rank lower on the search results page. Google and other search engines know that users don’t want to wait around while your website takes ages to load, so instead they will choose faster sites to appear first on the search result pages.

Make sure to clean up your site by removing unnecessary plugins, large images etc. Make sure your images are sized for web (shoot for 800px wide or less), and also try and install a free plugin like GZip Ninja Speed Compression. We recommend that you also test your website speed using a free site such as gtmetrix.com which will provide you with a detailed report on how your website is performing.

NAME ALL IMAGES

When adding images to your website make sure to include your keyword in the description, title, and alt attribute settings for your images. Also, name your images something that relates to what the image actually is, such as “chocolate-cake.jpg” instead of img_28945.jpg. This allows search engines to read the image files to work out what you are displaying on the site.

ADD FRESH CONTENT

All search engines wants to share the freshest, most relevant content, and favours websites that are consistently adding new content and articles. Aim to blog at least once a week if possible, but the more, the better!

USE FREE SEO PLUGINS

We recommend that you use an SEO plugin to help you improve the SEO performance for each of your website pages. If you website is developed using WordPress, then we recommend that you add the Yoast SEO Plugin. This SEO plugin helps you to make sure that you’re using keywords in all the right places.
